Building with Round Wood

Project Name: Reciprocal Classroom

Build Type: Volunteer

Location: Tetbury, Gloucester

Date: May-June 2017

Company: Wholewoods (Adrian Leaman)

In the Spring of 2017, I decided to take 6 months out to volunteer on a range of eco building projects around the UK. One of the highlights of this was when I attended a community build camp led by the round wood timber framer Adrian Leaman of ‘Wholewoods’.

Wholewoods provide natural buildings for charities, community groups, trusts, schools and public organisations.

They really have a brilliantly sustainable approach to their build projects. Adrian runs courses and community build camps to teach inquisitive folk the craft of roundwood framing. From the process of each course a structure is made for a local school, group or organisation that is in need of one!

During the two week build, I worked as part of a team to craft all the members of a larch outdoor classroom for a local school. This was a great experience to understand the techniques of round wood timber framing whilst supporting a great cause.
